Shopify vs custom ecommerce

Compare Shopify with custom ecommerce by checkout needs, catalogue rules, integrations, fees, ownership and the operational work behind every order.

hopify is designed to make a large set of commerce problems ordinary: products, checkout, payments, orders, discounts, inventory and an app ecosystem arrive as a managed platform. Custom ecommerce is justified when the business model or operating workflow is sufficiently unusual that standard commerce primitives create more work than they remove. The decision should begin behind the storefront, where fulfilment, pricing and customer service actually happen.

For many retailers, a maintained platform is safer than owning a custom checkout and order system. Themes and extensions can deliver a branded storefront while the platform handles common commerce infrastructure. The business still needs to assess plan costs, payment processing, apps, theme work and internal operations, but it avoids rebuilding solved foundations.

  • Products and variants fit common catalogue models.
  • Checkout can use supported payment, shipping, tax and discount behaviour.
  • Operational systems have maintained Shopify integrations or manageable data flows.
  • The business accepts platform rules, recurring costs and extension boundaries.
  • A large ecosystem and straightforward administration are valuable.

Examples include complex configuration, contract pricing, marketplace behaviour, regulated purchasing, unusual fulfilment, multi-party approvals or a product experience that cannot be expressed sensibly through standard catalogue and checkout flows. Even then, “custom ecommerce” may mean a bespoke storefront or operations layer around a proven commerce engine—not writing card processing from scratch.

Document inventory sources, price ownership, tax, fraud review, fulfilment, returns, refunds, support, accounting and reporting. Ask what happens when data disagrees or an integration is unavailable. A beautiful custom frontend cannot repair an operating model that depends on staff copying orders between disconnected systems.

Compare subscription plans, payment and transaction fees, apps, themes, specialist development and recurring administration with custom discovery, implementation, hosting, security, maintenance and compliance. Use real order volume and margins. A platform fee can be excellent value if it replaces engineering and operational risk; an app stack can become expensive if every rule needs another subscription.
