What causes App Store rejection, and what does submission cost?

Prepare account ownership, privacy, metadata, review access and testing—and understand Apple's membership fee versus the real human cost of submission.

pp Store submission is part product launch, part account administration and part compliance review. The build itself is only one input. Preparing the developer account, ownership, privacy answers, store listing and review instructions early prevents a finished app from waiting on paperwork or missing information at the end.

The business that owns the app should normally control the Apple Developer account. Apple currently charges 99 USD, or local currency where available, per membership year. Apps from an organisation are listed under its legal entity name, and companies enrolling as organisations need a D-U-N-S Number. Enrolment and identity checks can take time, so this should not be left until launch week.

  • A production-ready build with complete flows rather than placeholder content.
  • A stable backend and any accounts, sample data or hardware needed to review restricted features.
  • Clear review notes explaining non-obvious behaviour and how to reach important screens.
  • A support URL and a working contact route for users.
  • An app name, description, keywords, category, age rating, screenshots and release information.
  • Export-compliance, content-rights and regional declarations where they apply.

Apple requires a privacy policy URL for iOS apps and requires data-handling practices to be explained in App Store Connect. The answers must include data collected by third-party code such as analytics, advertising or support SDKs, not only code written by the app team. They must also stay current when the app or its providers change.

If an app lets users create an account, Apple's current review guidelines require account deletion to be available inside the app. Digital purchases, subscriptions and some sign-in systems also have specific rules. These policies change, and regional alternatives add complexity, so the exact live guidelines should be reviewed against the finished business model instead of copied from an old launch checklist.

A development studio can prepare, submit and respond, but it cannot guarantee approval or a precise review time. Leave contingency between submission and a public campaign. A rejection often identifies a question to answer, missing access or a guideline issue to correct; it is a workflow to manage, not evidence that the entire app has failed.

Apple currently lists the Developer Program at 99 USD per membership year, or local currency where available. There is not a separate Apple fee for each ordinary build submission. The material cost is preparing and maintaining the release: account verification, certificates, screenshots, descriptions, privacy answers, review notes, test access and any changes required after review.

  • The build crashes, contains unfinished surfaces or does not let reviewers complete the primary flow.
  • Review credentials, hardware context or instructions are missing.
  • Privacy declarations do not match actual data collection or third-party SDK behaviour.
  • Payments or subscriptions use a flow that conflicts with current store rules.
  • The listing promises behaviour the submitted build does not provide.
  • The product is a thin or confusing wrapper without enough useful app experience.
  • Permissions are requested without a clear, timely user benefit.

App Review rules change. Check the current official guidelines during product design and again before submission. Write review notes for a person encountering the product cold; explain unusual flows and provide stable test data.
